Mavoy Movie Awards 2020 - results

These are the winners of the 2020 Mavoy Movie Awards, revealed on Saturday 8th February 2020.

Best Picture

THE LIGHTHOUSE
I could give it to Parasite, which still has the most awards, but I'm giving it to The Lighthouse, because it provided me with a best cinema experience in a few years. Of course, it could be Parasite if I actually saw it in the cinema but well. I didn't know much about Robert Eggers, haven't seen The Witch (STILL haven't, but it's one of the highest films on my watchlist), went solely on the basis of few big comparisons - and I was very positively surprised. A few years ago I would not expect that I will be giving two big awards of the season to horror films - including the most important one.

Best Director

BONG JOON-HOO - PARASITE

I've only seen two Bong's films at the moment (Memories Of Murder would be the other one), but he has a chance to become one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers.

Best Lead Actress

LUPITA NYONG'O - US

The Academy anti-horror bias is sadly a thing. Easily the best performance of the year, to the point of staying in character all the time, between the takes as well.
Best Lead Actor

ADAM DRIVER - MARRIAGE STORY / THE REPORT

SONG KANG-HO - PARASITE

I wanted to give a double award, because I thought this amazing ensemble cast of Parasite just can't be ignored. I thought of Park first, but Song is a veteran of Korean cinema, and he deserves to be awarded.
Best Supporting Actor

JOE PESCI - THE IRISHMAN

It was a little surprising, but in my opinion Pesci outshone both De Niro and Pacino in The Irishman. It's also the only award for Scorsese's film, despite so many nominations.

No awards for Joker or Jojo Rabbit either, even if I think that most of the critique of these films is undeserved and they're very good films (or great, when it comes to Jojo).

Best Supporting Actress

LAURA DERN - MARRIAGE STORY / LITTLE WOMEN
It just had to be Laura, though her Lynch connections make me a bit biased.

Best Child Actor or Actress

NOAH JUPE - HONEY BOY

Julia Butters losing means Once Upon A Time In Hollywood doesn't have a single award. I LOVED Julia's performance, but Noah had a much bigger part in his film.
